A Warning About a Police Impersonation Scam

r/Thailand · September 26, 2025

I want to share what happened to me today, September 26th, 2025, to warn others. I almost fell for this, and it was a terrifying experience. It started at 1:26 PM with a call from 082-408-2490. The person on the line claimed to be from AIS headquarters. They spoke in a very robotic way, like they were reading from a script, and told me a phone number had been registered in my name in another province (Nakhon Phanom). They alleged this number was being used as a mule account for illegal gambling funds and that I was now implicated in a serious crime with some person I’d never heard of. This is where it gets crazy. The "AIS agent" then said they needed to transfer me directly to the police. Looking back, how on earth can a phone company just patch you through to a police station? That should have been the first massive red flag, but I was so panicked from the start that I didn't think it through. I was connected with a man claiming to be a police officer from the Tha Uthen Police Station. He immediately tried to get me to travel to the province to file a report. When I said that was impossible, he offered to "help" me by handling it over a video call on the LINE app. Once the video call started, the intimidation ramped up. The guy was in a full police uniform, in what looked like an office, and he was incredibly harsh and strict. He ordered me to turn off all other devices around me and to look directly at the camera at all times. I realize now this was a tactic to stop me from secretly Googling the phone numbers or looking up information about this scam. He was trying to completely control my environment. He was so rude, asking me all sorts of personal questions about my life that had nothing to do with the "case." The whole time, they were acting their parts so well, building this intense pressure. At one point, my suspicion got the better of me, and I asked, "Is this real? Are you trying to fool me?" He completely lost it. He started yelling angrily, "WHY WOULD I DO THAT?! I'M A POLICE OFFICER, I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU! I'M BEING NICE!" His over-the-top, defensive reaction was what started to clear my head. The final part of the scam was that he needed to "verify my innocence" by inspecting all of my bank accounts. To do this, he said I had to scan a QR code he would send, which would transfer all my money to a "secure" account for inspection. He promised I'd get it all back, plus compensation for being a "scapegoat." The mention of scanning a QR code to transfer money was the final, undeniable proof I needed. I immediately hung up. Instantly, they started spam-calling me over and over, threatening that my bank accounts would be frozen immediately. I just blocked their number and their LINE account. I'm sharing this because even though I had suspicions throughout the two-hour ordeal, their psychological manipulation was incredibly effective. They create a sense of panic and urgency to stop you from thinking clearly. The fact that they go as far as wearing a uniform and acting out this whole scenario is insane. Impersonating a police officer is a serious crime, and their audacity is shocking. Please be careful out there. ----------------------- UPDATE: The scammers somehow had my private information (recalling what happened, they asked my device I'm using atm) and have contacted my bank and reported my bank account. Now that bank is blocked, I have contacted my bank for this, they said currently I cannot access until I go to my branch and then submit proof of documents and other stuff to have it unblocked. For some reason I cannot do it from same bank from a different branch. PS: I do not understand, how it is so easy for random scammers to block a 3rd party's Bank Account. BUT me being the sole owner with proof, I cannot do anything immediately. Why wasn't there any kind of notification or verification for such block/report claim from a random scammers? what makes their word stand higher than myself being the owner. ?? ----------------------- Read more
