Landlord Refusing Refund After Backing Out of Rental, Can I Trust the Realtor?
r/ThailandTourism · August 6, 2025
Hi all, I’m in Thailand looking for a long-term rental. I was introduced to a realtor named Peter through a girl I met here I know and trust. He seemed professional and helpful, so I sent a 9,000 THB deposit for a unit. After seeing the “employment prohibited” remark on my DTV visa, the landlord backed out. She agreed to refund me, but now refuses unless I give her a Thai bank account…which I don’t have. I offered a Wise payment link and QR code that would let her send the money in THB with no international fees, but she refuses to use it. Peter has been helping relay messages but says she’s making it unnecessarily difficult. He even suggested I report it to Wise (which I did) and said I may need to go to the police if she continues stalling. Has anyone worked with Peter before? Can he be trusted? And is this kind of thing common with landlords in Thailand? Would really appreciate any advice or insight! TL;DR: Landlord backed out after deposit, refuses to refund unless I provide a Thai bank account. Realtor says I may need to go to the police. Can I trust him? Is this normal?
